Cohen Votes Against Debt Ceiling Increase

This evening, Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) voted against the latest debt ceiling agreement, citing uncertainty of the effects of the unspecified future cuts. The bill passed 269 to 161 in the House of Representatives.

"I've recently voted twice to increase the debt ceiling, but this debt ceiling deal is unacceptable because the second series of cuts are not defined," said Congressman Cohen. "This bill is like a Trojan horse with Scylla and Charybdis inside. The American people should not be taken on a ride which would likely result in the poorest among us being worse off. There is no shared sacrifice or revenue coming from millionaires or those who are receiving tax shelters."
