Budget Control Act Brings Accountability and Real Solutions

Statement

Date: July 29, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman James Lankford (R-OK) issued the following statement after supporting the Budget Control Act of 2011 on the House floor tonight. The bill successfully passed the House and will move to the Senate for debate and passage.

"For months, Washington has argued about the debt ceiling, and it is time to resolve this issue and start the serious work of restoring fiscal stability," said Congressman Lankford. "The real problem is not a vote to raise the debt ceiling; the real problem is this debt that continues to smother our economy and the next generation. This bill enacts meaningful, long-term solutions to the national debt -- not just a quick fix to get us past August 2.

"The plan passed in the House tonight makes solid strides towards achieving the goal of cutting spending immediately, capping future spending and committing to the only true solution for our budget woes -- a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution to prevent this from happening in future Congresses. The House has now passed two serious proposals with fiscal reforms to accompany raising the debt ceiling and to initiate real budgetary reforms. It is time for the Senate to finally act and bring a conclusion to this debate."
