Hochul Supports Passage Of Default Prevention Bill

Tonight, Congresswoman Kathy Hochul voted for the bi-partisan bill that avoids an American default and addresses our nation's debt crisis. The plan would cut spending by $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years.

"Just a few moments ago, I voted for the bi-partisan bill that prevents us from defaulting on our obligation and ensures America continues to pay its bills on time," said Congresswoman Hochul. "This effort guarantees that our senior citizens will continue to receive their Social Security checks on time, that interest rates will not skyrocket to all time highs, and that our military men and women in harm's way will continue to be paid.

"While this bill was far from perfect, it does make certain that Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans benefits are all exempt from beneficiary cuts, and that the promises made to America's seniors, veterans and middle-class families are not affected.

"What was unconscionable was the fact that this vote came down to the last minute and that many Members of Congress felt that waiting until the eleventh hour was fine by their constituents. As Representatives of the people we have an obligation to complete their work efficiently and effectively."
