Hochul Votes To Cut Congressional Spending

Today, Congresswoman Kathy Hochul voted to cut congressional spending by over $232 million, a 6.4% decrease from this year's budget and a 9% decrease from the 2010 budget.

"Our nation's fiscal house is a mess and during tough economic times, it's important for Congress to lead by example," said Congresswoman Hochul. "As we near our national debt limit, it is vital that we eliminate wasteful spending throughout the federal government and that we start here, in Congress and in our own offices."

Representative Hochul voted for the 2012 Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill. Among the cuts in today's bill was a 6.4% decrease in Representatives' office budgets, which will save U.S. taxpayers $39 million next year. Hochul also voted to cut the Government Printing Office's budget by 20%, or $27 million.

Hochul added, "In this digital age, there is no need for the government to wastefully partake in the duplicative printing of documents that not only waste taxpayer dollars, but valuable natural resources as well.

"I have consistently pledged to cut wasteful spending and get our nation's finances under control. Over the course of the last seven weeks, I have voted to cut billions in unnecessary spending from the federal budget, without decimating Medicare or Social Security."
