The time to act to correct America's spending crisis is now. House Speaker John Boehner is leading the way toward fiscal recovery.
Speaker Boehner has empowered members of the Republican conference to be leaders and the results are reflected in the House passage the Ryan Budget and the bipartisan approval of the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act. He continues to ably represent the American people in negotiations over the debt limit.
In the few short months Republicans have held leadership in the House of Representatives, Speaker Boehner has advanced the only serious and responsible spending reforms in Washington -- certainly, the most consequential in Congressman Issa's 11 years of Congressional service. Republicans -- with the guidance and backing of our Speaker - are moving to reduce spending immediately while the President is trying to protect his big-spending turf and only subtly back away from the colossal spending increases he requested earlier this year . The Speaker rightly left debt negotiations with the President when, by his own admission, the President moved the goal posts and demanded dramatically higher tax increases -- putting the onus for change on the American people, instead of government where the responsibility lies.
Republicans stand behind the Speaker and will not give in to character assaults and alarmist lies which suggest needy Americans will be left unprotected by the Republican solution that restrains government. To the contrary, Republicans will move forward and spread the truth that the only way Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid checks will not be received is if the President of the United States orders they be withheld. He has power and flexibility within the Republican Budget Control Act to prioritize how the United States spends the money we do have. Doesn't sound so villainous, does it?
Republicans' responsible plan, the Budget Control Act, that enables us to pay our bills and correspondingly cancel other planned spending is the only tangible proposal on the table to save our nation from a debt default and put us back on a path to prosperity.
