One Year After Wall Street Reform

Statement

U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-1) released the following statement to mark the one-year anniversary of the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act being signed into law:

"A year ago, I voted to rein in the big banks and Wall Street CEO's who crashed our economy. This marked the end of an era of turning a blind eye to unbridled greed and lack of oversight.

"Unfortunately, Republicans in the House threaten to take us back to the failed policies that created this crisis--siding with the special interest groups like Wall Street banks and credit card companies.

"We know we can't trust big banks when they tell us they will self-regulate. It is the responsibility of Congress to protect people on Main Street from criminals like Bernie Madoff and reckless companies like AIG. That is a responsibility I embraced when I voted for the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act last year. Wall Street reform demands accountability and responsibility in the financial industry and puts an end to taxpayer funded bailouts once and for all.

"We know that when banks on Wall Street fail, it doesn't just affect a few wealthy investors. It means small business owners in Valencia County can't get a loan. It means homeowners in Moriarty owe more on their home than it is worth. It means seniors in Albuquerque who have worked honestly all their lives can't retire because their retirement accounts have been drained.

"I will continue to work in Congress to build a solid economic foundation for generations to come that rewards hard work and responsibility."
