Issue Position: Social Justice - Voting Rights

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Voting rights are fundamental rights within a democracy. One of the major accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement was securing the right to vote for millions of previously disenfranchised American citizens. We must therefore vigilantly protect the rights of all eligible voters. In recent elections, we have read reports of voter suppression and exclusion, particularly affecting eligible minority voters. I am concerned about attempts to interfere with the voting rights we cherish, and I have called on the U.S. Department of Justice to protect the rights of Americans to vote and to investigate thoroughly complaints about efforts to suppress or interfere with the rights of eligible voters.
