Ellison Introduces the "Don't Default on Military Families Act"

Statement

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement after he introduced the Don't Default on Military Families Act, a bill to improve the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA):

"Earlier today, I introduced legislation that would enhance eviction and foreclosure protections for military families in the event of a default on our credit. This bill would protect the credit scores of individual servicemembers if they miss a mortgage payment during a government default.

"Republicans are risking a default that could hurt the country's credit rating and put military families at risk of not receiving their salaries from the federal government. I didn't want to believe it was possible, but it seems that Congressional Republicans don't know how to break away from their ideology so the government can do the right thing for American families.

"There's no doubt that the best way to protect military families would be to increase the debt ceiling and prevent a default. At the very least, we have a responsibility to ensure that the men and women who give the most for our country are protected in a crisis."
