Pelosi: Chao Comments on Outsourcing Once Again Show That Bush Administration is Out of Touch

Washington, D.C.-House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on comments yesterday in New York City by Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, who defended outsourcing and suggested that American workers are too concerned about the problem:

"The Bush Administration's message to American workers on outsourcing is-don't worry, be happy. The Bush Administration is clearly not worried about outsourcing, and it outrageously continues to offer tax incentives to companies that ship American jobs overseas.

"That the Secretary of Labor believes American workers are unnecessarily anxious about outsourcing speaks volumes about how out of touch the Bush Administration is. When you are struggling to find a job, it is gut-wrenching to watch your community's good jobs being sent overseas. If Administration officials offered a job-creation plan instead of only patronizing words, American workers would have a lot less to worry about.

"Americans know that trade is good for our economy when we export American goods, not when we export American jobs. Democrats know that we can do better. We have created an 'American Jobs Plan' to keep jobs here at home and to ensure that American companies remain the most competitive and innovative in the world."
