Today, U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) voted in favor of The Budget Control Act of 2011, a plan to cut spending and end the debt limit crisis.
Lummis released the following statement after House passage of the legislation:
"America must get to the business of changing the trajectory of its spending, and today must be day one for changing the way Washington works. For the third consecutive year, our deficits have been in excess of $1 trillion and our debt now surpasses $14 trillion. The Administration has estimated that total public debt will surpass $15.4 trillion this year, which is more than the value of the entire American economy. Meanwhile, foreign countries like China are feeding our addiction as the federal government borrows nearly 40 cents of every dollar it spends.
"Although the bill is not perfect, The Budget Control Act of 2011 will begin to restore confidence in the American dream. This bill contains spending cuts that outweigh the increase in the debt limit without raising taxes on the American people. Importantly, the legislation includes a crucial measure that guarantees a vote on the balanced budget amendment before any more debt ceiling increases, which is the ultimate solution to getting America's finances back on track.
"Restraint is not in Washington's vocabulary. Enough already; the only remedy to Washington's spending addiction is real reform. America cannot afford to wait. We must pay our bills, cut up the credit cards and show the world that the full faith and credit of the United States means something."
