As the debate over raising the nation's borrowing limit heats up in Congress, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., stands committed to serious spending cuts and budget reforms.

"If we want to protect our seniors and grandchildren, encourage small businesses to create jobs and safeguard the American dream, we need to get our economy back on track. Everyone from the small business owner in West Virginia to the experts at S&P and Moody's are looking to Washington to right this fiscal mess. We have a responsibility to demonstrate that we can responsibly raise the debt ceiling by changing the way Washington treats the taxpayer's dollar," stated Capito.

Since the President took office in 2009, the national debt has ballooned by $3.7 trillion. Economists warn that continuing to spend money we don't have may lead to a European-like debt crisis down the road.

Capito believes the United States will always pay its bills and will therefore reach a deal to raise the debt ceiling. She views this debate as an opportunity to make major budgetary reforms in Washington that will lead us to more fiscally sound ground.

Tonight, the House is scheduled to vote on the "Cut, Cap, Balance" Act which would save $111 billion in 2012 and approximately $5.8 trillion over ten years. It also puts in place caps on spending and increases the debt limit only after Congress passes a Balanced Budget Amendment.
