Himes records video message for "It Gets Better' campaign to show support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth

Congressman Jim Himes, whose district includes Monroe, has recorded a video for the "It Gets Better" campaign.

In his video message to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth, Himes tells them that while things may be difficult now, there is "an accepting, tolerant world you'll find, where you're appreciated for who you are."

The "It Gets Better" project was started in September 2010 in response to a series of suicides committed by LGBT youth. The project collects videos of personal messages to LGBT youth regarding bullying, suicide, and self-esteem.

More than 10,000 people have contributed a video to the project, including President Barack Obama and the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

"Kids deserve to know that there are people out there who care about them and support them regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or anything else that makes them feel different," said Himes, a second-term Democrat from Greenwich.
