Heinrich Opposes GOP "Cut, Cap, and End Medicare" Plan

U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-1) issued the following statement in opposition to House Republicans' plan to "Cut, Cap, and End Medicare." The bill, H.R. 2560, passed the House tonight by a vote of 234-190.

"This extreme proposal aims to amend our Constitution to preserve tax breaks for the ultra-rich, while making dangerous cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

"Republicans in Congress continue to play politics with our nation's fragile economic recovery. My colleagues on the other side of the aisle were more than happy to run up the U.S. government's tab with tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, but they're not willing to pay the bill when it comes due. This is not a responsible way to govern, and the outcome of this charade is anything but certain.

"It's time to come together and work toward a serious, comprehensive deficit reduction proposal that deals with the real issues and strengthens Medicare and Social Security for the long term."
