ongressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) today released the following statement on H.R. 1309, the Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2011. This bill renews the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for five years.
"Today, I supported the bipartisan Flood Insurance Reform Act. This bill includes important reforms to the National Flood Insurance Program, which provides protection to homeowners in California and the San Joaquin Valley. Without action the program will expire at the end of September with harmful consequences for many families and the economy.
"During debate, I spoke on the House floor in favor of an amendment offered by my colleague, Mr. Cardoza. This amendment removed a harmful provision that would unnecessarily draw many more areas -- including communities in the San Joaquin Valley -- into the flood plain, forcing homeowners to shoulder new financial burdens. I'm pleased this amendment passed the House with bipartisan support and the harmful provision was removed from the bill."
