Union Leader-Common-sense Kelly: Keeping enemy at bay

Against all common sense, the Obama administration remains determined to treat America's foreign enemy combatants to the rights and privileges of the U.S. criminal court system. This includes its continued attempts to shut down our secure facilities at Guantanamo Bay. Luckily, common sense has Kelly Ayotte on its side.

New Hampshire's freshman U.S. Senator is using her experience as a seasoned prosecutor and her considerable eloquence to oppose this insane policy. She has sponsored legislation to keep open the Guantanamo facility, to designate it as the single secure facility for holding suspected terrorists, and to prohibit such detention facilities on the U.S. mainland.

Not content with second-hand information, Sen. Ayotte toured "Gitmo" to see it for herself.

She has been forceful in questioning officials concerning the administration policies, and she is going to have to keep it up. Just last week, the Obama administration announced that Somali terrorist suspect Ahmed Warsame, who had been held aboard a U.S. Navy warship since April, has been secretly flown to the United States and has been charged in civil court.

"As an active member of two terrorist groups that have planned attacks against Americans and our allies, Warsame should be treated as an enemy combatant and tried in a military commission at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, where classified information and the public can be fully protected," Ayotte said.

President Obama is determined to close Guantanamo and has released several detainees. Ayotte counters out that 25 percent of those let go have landed back on the international fields to fight us again.

If the President thinks the Republicans are tough on debt negotiations, wait until he realizes who he is now up against in the fight to treat our enemies as enemies.
