Fighting to Keep Families Together

Statement

Date: June 24, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Immigration remains one of the issues at the forefront of national politics. Unfortunately, the conversation generally degrades into a divisive one, often pinning people against one another. Unfortunately, this is not new in America. From the rhetoric caricatured by Thomas Nast over a century ago, to current barrage of anti-immigration legislation in state houses across the country, vilifying the newest to our shores has deep roots. Deep, but not everlasting-- Last Saturday, Representative Luis Gutierrez, and I hosted a forum on immigration in Brooklyn to highlight the importance of keeping families together. Their families had an opportunity to discuss the realities of how contemporary immigration laws negatively affect their lives. This event illustrated the dire circumstances in which Brooklyn families live due to current immigration policy. For this reason I will continue to press forward to address Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
