Klobuchar Statement on Independence Day

Press Release

Date: July 4, 2011
Location: Minneapolis

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar released the following statement today in commemoration of Independence Day on July 4th:

"Today, we celebrate the birth of our country--the success of the great American experiment in Democracy that began with our founding fathers in 1776 and that still endures today. The principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence were so much more than an assertion of our freedom. They were the founding blueprint for a new way of governing --a government for the people.

"In Minnesota, we have never taken those words for granted. From the battlefield to the ballot box, from classrooms to boardrooms, from the kitchen table to the public square, Minnesotans have always stood and defended the virtues that we, as Minnesotans, hold dear: justice, equality and opportunity.

"This Fourth of July, we especially honor the men and women who dedicated their lives to defending our freedom: the veterans who fought overseas, the troops who serve in our Armed Forces, and the soldiers who never made it home, who laid down their lives for our country. As we gather together to celebrate, we salute these brave Americans, and thank them for their service.

"It's been 235 years since that first July Fourth, that hot summer day in Philadelphia when our country lit the shining torch of Democracy. Since then, America has emerged as a bright beacon of hope and equality, illuminating the path to freedom for people everywhere in the world.

"In our own country, it is a reminder of our strength and our resilience. While there's no question that we're facing tough challenges, we know we are up for the test. We know that we will pull through, just as our Founders did in 1776, when the fate of our nation was anything but certain. I know that we possess the same grit and determination today, and that we can stand together to meet the challenges of our time. This is the American way.

"I want to wish all Minnesotans a happy, safe, and memorable Independence Day."
