Rep. Murphy Applauds Federal Correction Saving Millions for Hospitals in 5th District

Congressman Chris Murphy released the following statement in response to a move by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that will save Connecticut hospitals $30 million in Medicare funding:

"Connecticut's hospitals provide great care to their patients, but they depend on a fair funding formula from the federal government for Medicare services. Due to an error by CMS in determining this formula, hospitals in my district and across the state were facing a substantial cut of $30 million in Medicare funds this year. At the Hospital of Central Connecticut to Charlotte Hungerford, those cuts would have been devastating. Thankfully, after our congressional delegation applied sufficient pressure, CMS reversed course and admitted their error. Now that this funding has been restored, our hospitals can breathe easier -- and so can their patients."

Connecticut's Congressional delegation learned in May that funding for Connecticut hospitals could be cut by up to $30 million due to an error in a proposed rule dealing with the Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS). The Connecticut Hospital Association alerted the delegation and asked for their assistance. Working together, the delegation informed CMS of the error and the agency agreed to review it. Today they announced the result of their review and the correction.
