E-News: Week in Review

Dear Friend,

Did you see that 17 local Chambers of Commerce are calling on the EPA to consider jobs and economic impact when making decisions that affect coal production?

Despite the various conversations I have had with EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and more recently with President Obama, I have been left with a mixed message about whether the agency does in fact consider jobs and economic impact when issuing guidance and rule making. I am thrilled to see organizations and grassroots activists rally behind my bill to mandate once and for all that the EPA consider jobs.

On another note, today I introduced a bill to spur the development of new in-vehicle technologies to prevent drunk driving. It's called the ROADS SAFE Act and it authorizes current funding to be directed toward researching an optional safety feature on new cars that could unobtrusively detect if a driver's BAC (blood alcohol level) was above the legal limit of .08.

Drunk driving deaths are 100% preventable, yet in 2009 over 10,000 people died from fatal crashes caused by drunken drivers. This is a smart, common sense bill to research how we can eliminate drunk driving and save lives.

On a lighter note, I played in the third annual bipartisan women's softball game which benefited Young Survival Coalition (YSC), an international charity dedicated to helping young women diagnosed with breast cancer. Female Members of Congress barely pulled out a win against members of the D.C. press corps. The final score was 5-4.

It is an honor to serve you.

Sincerely,

Shelley

Member of Congress
