Representative Gary Peters today called on House Republican leaders to return to the negotiating table and continue talks aimed at reducing the nation's budget deficit. On Thursday, Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia walked out of bipartisan budget talks.

"Only in Washington do people think you can solve a problem by walking away from the table. In Michigan, people understand that speeches and grandstanding aren't going to fix the budget crisis, and both sides need to get serious about working together for the good of the country. It is long past time for Washington to start making the tough decisions to get our country back on a path to fiscal sustainability, and that's not going to happen if one side walks out," said Representative Gary Peters.

Peters has made fiscal discipline a top priority during his time in Congress, and he has a track record of working across the aisle to advance deficit-reduction measures. Earlier this year, Peters teamed up with Republican Rep. Cory Gardner from Colorado to introduce two measures aimed at cutting unnecessary government programs -- and Peters' first legislative initiative of the year, an amendment to ensure that program savings are used for deficit reduction, passed the House with bipartisan support.

Next Tuesday, Peters will host a public budget workshop with the non-partisan Concord Coalition, inviting local residents in Michigan to bring forward their ideas for balancing the budget.
