Pelosi Statement on Porter Goss Nomination to be CIA Director

Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, a 10-year veteran of the House Intelligence Committee, released the following statement today on President Bush's nomination of Congressman Porter Goss to be the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency:

"I have great personal respect for Porter Goss and his experience at the CIA and the Intelligence Committee. When Congressman Goss was mentioned as being considered for this position, I made my views on his candidacy known.

"We must keep politics out of intelligence, and we must not have a Director of the Central Intelligence Agency who has acted politically. Now that the President has nominated Congressman Goss, the matter is before the Senate.

"It is interesting that the President has nominated Congressman Goss to a position that the 9/11 Commission says should be revamped, yet the Republican Congress and the President are not taking the necessary action to implement the Commission's recommendations. That is why I have called first on Speaker Hastert and today on President Bush to reconvene the Congress during August so that we can get to work on the 9/11 Commission's recommendations."
