Pelosi: Protect Children and Mothers from Mercury Poisoning
Washington, D.C.-House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the "Mother's Day Stroller Brigade to Stop Mercury Poisoning" rally:
"As the mother of five and grandmother of five, nothing is more precious to me than the health and well-being of our children. I applaud the 'Mother's Day Stroller Brigade to Stop Mercury Poisoning' for calling on President Bush to protect our children from mercury pollution.
"Mercury is especially dangerous to pregnant women and children. Mercury exposure can cause low birth weight and reduced motor skills, learning capacity, and memory, and other symptoms of neurological damage.
"Our children are our future. To protect them, the Bush Administration must seek to reduce mercury pollution from power plants as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Instead, the Administration has proposed regulations that would fail to make significant cuts in power plant emissions until 2025 or even 2030. Once again, the Administration is putting profits before the health of Americans and our children."
