Pelosi: It's No Mystery-President Bush Has Failed To Create Jobs

Washington, D.C.-House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Treasury Secretary John Snow's comments Monday that the lack of jobs growth is a "mystery," and the Congressional Budget Office's annual report on the President's budget, which said that the Bush tax cuts would have a minimal impact on the economy:

"The Bush Administration may find the lack of job growth a mystery, but the 8 million Americans looking for work certainly do not.

"There is no mystery. President Bush has failed to put forth a responsible economic plan to create jobs, and has instead given massive tax cuts to those who need them least. Even the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office knows there is no mystery-it said that the President's economic plan would have a minimal impact on the economy.

"President Bush and the Republicans have added more than $3 trillion to the national debt and lost nearly 3 million jobs-the worst record on job creation since President Herbert Hoover during the Great Depression.

"Millions of unemployed Americans who want to work cannot wait for President Bush to solve the so-called mystery of job creation. At the very least, President Bush must call on the Republicans in Congress to extend unemployment benefits for the 2 million workers who will receive neither a paycheck nor unemployment benefits over the next six months. That includes more than 300,000 unemployed people in my home state of California alone.

"Democrats have been fighting to extend unemployment benefits for months, in the face of indifference from the President and resistance from the Republicans in Congress. We have a plan that would create more than one million jobs without adding one penny to the deficit."
