House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on comments yesterday by Treasury Secretary John Snow and Commerce Secretary Donald Evans that they would not endorse President Bush's prediction that the economy would create 2.6 million jobs by the end of 2004:

"President Bush is rapidly becoming the permanently surprised President. He is surprised that every economic prediction that he and his Administration make does not pan out. Yesterday, to his surprise, two of President Bush's cabinet secretaries, both key economic advisers, failed to support his prediction that the economy would create 2.6 million jobs this year.

"If the Bush Administration cannot even agree on what its so-called economic plan would do, it should be no surprise that it is not creating new jobs. It is certainly no surprise to the more than 8 million Americans looking for jobs that the Bush Administration policies do not work.

"With almost 3 million private sector jobs lost over the past three years, a $521 billion deficit, and an economic policy that supports the shift of jobs overseas, America is ready for a change.

"Democrats support responsible tax cuts for middle-class families that create jobs and a manufacturing tax credit that keeps good paying jobs here at home. And we are going to fight for them this year.

"It is time for a change. President Bush and the Republicans must discard their failed economic policies and work with us to expand economic opportunity in this country for all Americans."
