Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement on today's Department of Labor report indicating that the economy added 54,000 jobs in May:
"Today's jobs numbers, while not as robust as we had hoped, still represent important progress in our effort to rebuild the economy. The private sector had its 15th straight month of job creation in May, fueled by small businesses that are the backbone of our recovery.
"But with millions of Americans still out of work and families struggling to make ends meet, there is still more we must do. Unfortunately, Washington Republicans have failed to make job creation a priority -- in fact, economists of every political stripe have said their budget would threaten our fragile recovery. Their plan to extend tax cuts to millionaires and subsidies for big oil companies while cutting investments for education and innovation is a recipe for stopping the recovery.
"While Democrats have introduced our "Make It In America' plan, House Republicans have not brought a single job creation bill to the floor since taking the majority five months ago. It is time for the GOP to stop putting special interests first, and work with Democrats to help put Americans back to work."
