Colorado's U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Udall sent a letter to the Postmaster General this week that voiced their concern for the U.S. Postal Service's recent proposal to close rural post offices.

"Small and remote communities, especially rural and mountain regions, often depend on the local post office as an accessible representation of the federal government for their mail service," the letter said.

New Raymer, a town in northeast Weld County, was specifically mentioned in the letter. The town of about 100 people has voiced worries about losing its post office.

These potential closures are due to falling postal revenue. The Postal Service is not funded by taxes.

In the letter released Friday the senators support the Postal Service for attempting to cut losses, but they also asked for an explanation and further information on these potential closures.
