Capito To Vote Against Raising The Debt Ceiling Without A Serious Plan To Cut Spending

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., will vote against a bill in the House today that would increase the nation's statutory debt limit without any spending cuts or reforms.

"I have said from the start that an increase in the debt limit must be met with a serious plan to decrease our record deficit in order to work toward a balanced budget. I am extremely disappointed in the lack of leadership on the part of the President and Congressional Democrats when it comes to getting our economy back on track. They have not put forth a single plan to address our out-of-control debt and deficit; instead they continue to ask the American people to extend the credit line on the taxpayer's credit card. Enough is enough. It's time to start living within our means.

"Two weeks ago I visited the Bureau of Public Debt in Parkersburg. Coincidentally, my visit coincided with the day after we hit the $14.2 trillion statutory debt limit which put my tour in a unique perspective.

"As part of my visit I watched a $28 billion treasury auction. It's easy to talk about our budget in the abstract--a billion dollars here and a trillion dollars there--but it's a powerful thing to literally see them issue the "IOU's" that my grandchild will be on the hook for.

"We must--and will--make it easier to save than to spend in Washington. In order to get our economy back on track and people back to work, I will not vote for an increase in the debt ceiling without significant spending cuts and serious reforms to right our broken fiscal house."
