Bills to Assist Veterans Pass House

Statement

This week several veteran-related bills passed the House, which I supported.

Among the pieces of legislation was language to address some inequity in the post-9/11 GI bill. Under the bill that passed, student veterans would have additional resources to attend college, regardless of where they chose to obtain their education. Without this change, the Department of Veterans' Affairs estimates 30,000 student veterans- including those in Michigan and at least 5 other states- might be forced to transfer, drop out of school, or find another way to pay for the inequity in GI Bill payments.

I am regularly reminded of the duties and sacrifices that our men and women in uniform perform each day. I am proud to stand with our nation's veterans to ensure that they receive the benefits they earned.

The series of bills also included a cost-of-living adjustment for some and expressed a sense of the Congress for appreciation of our nation's veterans.
