Statement

A September 2010 Small Business Administration report concluded that federal regulations cost U.S. businesses $1.75 trillion each year. To put this in perspective, the cost equates to $8,086 per employee in 2008, with small businesses facing an even higher average burden. Add the 43 new major federal regulations promulgated in fiscal year 2010 and the additional high cost of Michigan state regulations, and the path to economic revitalization is filled with barriers.

America has always been a country that attracts great entrepreneurs and allows businesses to flourish. I understand the importance of a strong business climate, and my most important priority is to foster job growth and prosperity to keep our nation globally competitive.

This week I joined with a number of my colleagues in participating in the American Job Creators Initiative. The goal of this effort is to identify the most pressing barriers for businesses to grow jobs, and I want to invite all the constituents of the 7thDistrict, especially business leaders, to participate in a survey to let me know how you think government and its regulations are impacting job creation.

During a recent tour of the district, I convened several business roundtables to discuss the topic of jobs. During these roundtables, I heard some troubling stories about how government was standing in the way of job growth.
