Statement of the Governor on the Supreme Court Decision in the Virginia Cross-Burning Case

Date: April 7, 2003
Location: Richmond, VA
Issues: Judicial Branch

Governor Mark R. Warner released the following statement today in response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding Virginia's ban on cross burning.

"I am pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Virginia's statute, which has been on the books for decades.

"I respect the First Amendment protection of speech, but burning a cross is never about free speech. Historically in Virginia, these provocative acts are clearly intended to menace and intimidate African-Americans."

"Today's ruling sends a powerful signal that there is no place for hate in Virginia."
