Statement

Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson (CA-37) released the following statement reflecting in honor of Cinco de Mayo:

"On Cinco de Mayo we remember the determination and bravery shown by the people of Mexico in their fight against France at the Battle of Puebla nearly 150 years ago. Poorly supplied and vastly outnumbered, their victory in the face of such odds serves as a testament to the incredible spirit and inspiring history Mexican-Americans, and all Hispanics, bring to the American experience.

"Mexican-Americans and Hispanics have left, and will no doubt continue to leave, an indelible mark on American culture, helping to shape our identity and shared history. In California's 37th District, we are strengthened by those individuals who, through their hard work and active participation in the community, are vital contributors to our success.

"Earlier this week I had the pleasure of joining the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute at the Fiesta de Golf Scholarship Challenge, which raises vital scholarship dollars to benefit the next generation of Latino leaders. This Saturday, May 7th, I will join residents of Carson at the Southbay Pavilion to celebrate at an event made possible only through the hard work, volunteer and fundraising efforts of the community. I encourage individuals and families through the 37th District to join me in celebrating Cinco de Mayo at events like these and others being held all over our community throughout the week."
