Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement on Earth Day. Pingree is a founding member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition in Congress.
"More than any other time in recent years we find our clean environment is at risk and under attack. In Washington some politicians want to block the EPA's enforcement of clean air standards, allow drilling on valuable fishing grounds and slow down energy efficiency improvements, all the while giving billions of dollars in hand-outs to the big oil companies. Those are the wrong priorities for our environment and the wrong priorities for American families."
"In the short term we have to crack down on oil companies that are artificially driving up the price of gas, but in the long term the only real solution to our energy problems is going to be developing new sources of clean energy like wind and tidal power. We can protect our environment while creating good paying jobs at the same time, but continuing to make taxpayers subsidize big oil companies isn't going to make that happen."
