Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following information in reference to the tornado activity that pummeled through the Metro Jackson area on April 15, 2011. As of today Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reports that 34 homes and 3 businesses in the Jackson/Clinton area were completely destroyed, 122 homes and 6 businesses suffered major damage, and 398 homes and 10 businesses received minor damage.
"We are extremely blessed that there were no fatalities and only eleven people reported injured as a result of the April 15th tornado," said Thompson. "My thoughts and prayers go out to the residents and businesses that where directly affected by storms. My staff will continue to work with local, state, and federal officials to ensure that the impacted areas receive appropriate consideration for disaster recovery assistance."
The Governor has issued an emergency declaration in several counties including Hinds. In order to get a federal disaster declaration the Federal Emergency Management agency is required to conduct an assessment of the damaged area. As a follow up to the Governor's request, FEMA will be on hand tomorrow in the Metro area to assess the damage
