Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), the leader of 114 House Democrats urging a clean extension of the debt ceiling, issued the following statement Tuesday in response to comments by Speaker John Boehner in which he indicated there is no guarantee the debt ceiling will be extended.
"Speaker Boehner called the debt ceiling vote an adult moment. That's good advice; he should take it. There is nothing adult about holding America's full faith and credit hostage. There is nothing adult about risking a mid-air stall in America's fledgling economy. And there is nothing adult about America failing to pay its bills.
"Anyone who doubts that the Speaker and Majority Leader are playing with fire should read J.P. Morgan's chilling analysis detailing the consequences of failing to act promptly on the debt limit. A failure to act would be nothing short of reckless."
