U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) today sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asking that the State Department "take all reasonable measures" to secure the immediate release of James Foley -- a journalist with ties to Rochester, New Hampshire, who has been detained in Libya since April 5. Ayotte also requested that the State Department work to ensure that Foley is treated humanely and requested that efforts be taken to demand that his family and colleagues be able to visit or contact him.
Foley works as a correspondent with GlobalPost, a news outlet based in Boston. He grew up in Wolfeboro and his parents live Rochester.

Dear Secretary Clinton:
I would like to express my deep and continued concern regarding the Americans being held against their will in Libya by the Qaddafi regime. I am particularly concerned about James Foley, an American journalist with ties to my state of New Hampshire who has been detained in Libya since April 5th. Mr. Foley is now enduring his third week of captivity.
Mr. Foley works as a correspondent with GlobalPost, a news outlet based in Boston, Massachusetts. Understandably, Mr. Foley's family has expressed deep concern about his safety and is eager to see him released immediately. I ask the State Department to take all reasonable measures to secure Mr. Foley's immediate release.
Mr. Foley is a peaceful non-combatant. I request that the State Department warn the Qaddafi regime to treat Mr. Foley humanely and with dignity while he is detained. In addition, pending Mr. Foley's release, the State Department should demand that Mr. Foley's family and colleagues be able to visit him or at least call him.
