Lummis Statement on Agreement to Avert a Government Shutdown

U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) released the following statement regarding the bipartisan budget agreement reached by negotiators in the U.S. House and Senate that cuts spending and averts a shutdown of the federal government:

"People all over America have been calling for Washington to halt the government spending spree and cut up the credit cards. I'm pleased a bipartisan agreement was reached to keep the government open while taking steps to ensure the American people's wishes to cut spending were at the heart of the compromise.

"It's important to remember that the possibility of a shutdown could have been avoided if Congress would have fulfilled its obligation to consider a bill to fund the government last year.

"I look forward to next week's final passage of a long-term budget that turns around our country's wayward fiscal ship. Then we can move on to the 2012 budget where we can enact long-term cuts that save trillions of dollars and begin to pay down our mountain of debt."
