Capito Statement On News That Congress Will Prevent A Government Shutdown

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., released the following statement in response to news that Congress has reached an agreement to keep the government open:

"I applaud that we have reached an agreement to prevent a government shutdown. This was a long road, and I am proud that in the end we put the American people and its military first. Let me be clear, this debate was an attempt to pry some in Washington from a credit card they are using to bankrupt our country. We have many difficult days ahead as we attempt to put our fiscal house in order, but today we must stand together and acknowledge the hard work that has been done. I will continue to live up to my promise to trim the massive debt each of us carries in order to secure a bright, prosperous future for our kids and grandkids."

Background:

Each American taxpayer shares $128,000 of the national debt.

Increase in the national debt under the Democrat Majority: $5.43 trillion.

Capito voted for and the House passed H.R. 1 which would cut $61 billion, fund the government through the end of FY2011, and keep the government open.

Capito voted for and the House passed H.R. 1255 which would force Members of Congress to forgo the amount of salary they would have been paid during a shutdown, and keep the government open.

Capito voted for and the House passed H.R. 1363 which would fund the Department of Defense through the end of FY2011, cut $12 billion, and keep the government open.
