Capito Statement On President's Speech At George Washington University

Statement

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., released the following statement in response to President Obama's speech today at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.:

"The President had a chance to lay out a plan to tackle our debt and deficit in his FY2012 budget proposal released two months ago. Instead, his budget not only includes $1.5 trillion in tax increases, it mortgages our children's futures by generating $9 trillion in deficits over the next decade. Are Americans supposed to believe that despite what's on the record, the President is all of the sudden concerned about our nation's bottom line? Now, instead of recognizing that the responsible way to get our fiscal house in order is by cutting spending, the President is looking to the American taxpayer to fill the budget gap.

"In the first two years of his presidency, President Obama and Congressional Democrats tacked on a record $3.5 trillion to the taxpayers' credit card. Clearly, Washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem.

"Continuing down this path of more spending and more debt will hurt our nation; as the old adage goes, "if you're in a hole, stop digging.' West Virginians deserve a new path forward, one that acknowledges the gravity of our economic situation and addresses it in a responsible way."
