Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement regarding NOAA's announcement on increased catch limits for 12 species of ground fish caught in the Gulf of Maine. The new limits go into effect May 1.
Pingree recently spoke out in favor of the new sectors-based fisheries management system, which is replacing the old days-at-sea system. She says the new system is leading to better and more predictable prices for Maine fishermen.
This is good news for Maine's coastal communities and fishermen. Higher catch limits on these stocks mean Maine fishermen will be better off and are a sign that we are turning the corner on groundfish. The new sector management system provides more accurate and detailed data about what is caught and allows catch limits to be set at higher levels.
