Van Hollen: Obama Laid Out the Clear Choice Facing our Nation

Statement

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member on the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement following President Obama's speech on the federal budget:

"President Obama has laid out the clear choice facing our nation. The question is not whether or not we need to get our fiscal house in order, but how. Today, both House Democrats and the President made clear that we can reduce the deficit in a steady, responsible way as we build the foundation for shared prosperity and long-term economic growth. This approach stands in direct contrast with the Republican budget, which increases tax breaks for millionaires and special interests and pays for these new tax cuts on the backs of working Americans.

"To govern is to choose. Democrats are committed to making choices that include deficit reduction through shared sacrifice and strategic national investments to help win the future. The Republicans' plan will cost American jobs, end health security for seniors, and undermine our long-term success -- those choices are simply wrong for our nation."
