Lummis Votes to Fund Troops, Prevent Government Shutdown

Statement

Today, U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) voted in support of H.R. 1363, The Department of Defense and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011. The legislation prevents a government shutdown by extending federal funding for another week in addition to funding the Department of Defense -- including pay for our troops and their families for the rest of the fiscal year.

Lummis released the following statement:

"The current budget situation is a result of the 111th Democratic led-Congress' failure to produce a FY 2011 budget coupled with the Senate's failure to come forward with a serious plan this Congress. Although another short-term funding measure is not preferable, H.R. 1363 is necessary to keep the government open until agreement is reached.

"One thing we can all agree on is the critical need to fulfill our obligation to fund our troops. The last thing our servicemen and servicewomen should need to worry about is whether or not their families will have financial security as the budget debate continues.

"The Department of Defense and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011 furthers Republicans' commitment to reversing the culture of runaway spending by stepping up the cuts to $12 billion. H.R. 1363 not only includes cuts from the House's original proposal, H.R. 1, but it incorporates items from President Obama's budget request.

"I remain hopeful that Congress can work together to stop the spending spree and make the serious spending cuts people in Wyoming and all over America have been asking for."
