Rep. Gary Peters Condemns Bombing of Israeli Civilians

Statement

In response to today's bombing of Israeli civilians in Jerusalem, which left at least one dead and dozens more injured, Rep. Gary Peters (D-MI) released the following statement.

"I strongly condemn today's bus bombing in Jerusalem. This cowardly act, following increased rocket attacks into Israel from Gaza and the murder of the Fogel family while they slept in their home, is part of a disturbing escalation of violence against Israeli civilians. The United States must stand steadfast with our friend and ally Israel and demand that the Palestinian Authority quell this wave of violence. I am saddened and outraged at the attacks on Israeli citizens that have taken place in recent weeks and pray for the victims and their families. I wish the survivors of this tragedy a quick and speedy recovery."

Since taking office, Rep. Gary Peters has been an outspoken advocate for strengthening America's relationship with Israel. He traveled to Israel in 2009 shortly after taking office to meet with Israeli leaders and discuss economic and security cooperation. In the aftermath of the flotilla incident in 2010, Peters led the bipartisan effort to affirm Israel's right to self defense, authoring a letter of support signed by 338 members of Congress.

In February of this year, Peters joined Rep. Bob Dold (R-IL) in a bipartisan letter to House leaders, calling for Congress to maintain American security assistance to Israel.
