Markey Urges Eval of Proposed AT&T-T-Mobile Deal for Consumers, Competition, Choice

Statement

Date: March 20, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a senior member and former chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee's Communications, Technology and the Internet Subcommittee, issued the following statement upon announcement from AT&T that it intends to acquire T-Mobile USA.

"I intend to evaluate the proposed merger of AT&T and T Mobile closely with a focus on how it would impact consumers, competition, and choice. While the parties have determined that the merger is in their corporate interests, it must also be in the public interest. We should hold Congressional hearings to fully assess the effects of this proposed merger, and I look forward to actively participating in them with my colleagues."
