Pain at the Pump Rising -- We Need to Drill in the Gulf and ANWR Now

Congressman Jeff Landry (Republican, New Iberia), citing the Administration's call for a robust energy policy, is calling President Obama's bluff by not only urging the immediate release of Gulf drilling permits but also by co-sponsoring H.R. 49 -- the American Energy Independence and Price Reduction Act -- which, if passed, will use revenues from the oil and gas production in a 2,000 acre section of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for a vast array of 18 renewable and alternative energy projects.

"With gas prices rising to nearly $5 per gallon, it is time the Administration realize we need a robust energy policy that is affordable and dependable," said Landry. "We can lower the pain at the pump by responsibly increasing domestic energy production. We need to not only drill in the Gulf of Mexico, but we also need to drill in ANWR and use renewable energy sources."

Landry, the House's leading authority on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, continued: "My co-sponsoring of H.R. 49 highlights my commitment to a comprehensive energy policy and job creation. ANWR's 10.4 billion barrels of recoverable oil, more than twice the proven oil reserves in all of Texas, will provide more than one million barrels of oil each day for American consumers for the next 30 years. At today's price of oil, ANWR development would deliver nearly $200 billion in corporate income tax and royalty revenue to the federal government and would create hundreds of thousands of jobs."

"This bill is one of the most comprehensive energy bills on the floor. I encourage my colleagues to renew their focus on domestic energy production and support H.R. 49," Landry concluded.
