Schumer, Hinchey Announce BAE Systems Controls Receives Navy Award Totaling Nearly $13 Million for Defensive Weapons System

Today, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer and Congressman Maurice Hinchey announced that BAE Systems Controls Inc. in Johnson City has received a Navy award totaling $12,787,033 in modification of a previously awarded firm-fixed-price contract to procure 12 Interim Defensive Weapons Systems (IDWS) Mission Kits to support the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. The IDWS provides the aircraft and its crew with a mission-configurable, night vision device compatible defensive weapons system -- a precision controlled machine gun that provides 360 degree firing capability. The work will take place at the Johnson City location, and is expected to be completed by December 2012.

"This contract means greater protection to our service members defending our country, and an economic shot in the arm for BAE Systems, its workers and Broome County where these weapons are made," said Senator Schumer. "This award only confirms that BAE Systems continues to be a first-class defense firm doing great work in Johnson City."

"The vast majority of our military personnel flying V-22s in combat situations are unnecessarily vulnerable to attack," said Congressman Hinchey."I'm proud that the BAE team of employees in Johnson City is working hard to address that problem, and I'll continue to support this and other projects that help provide jobs to the Southern Tier's talented workforce."
