Rep. Todd Young votes to keep government running, cut $4 billion from budget

Statement

Rep. Todd Young voted in favor of H.J.Res. 44 on Tuesday, a continuing resolution that funds the federal government through March 18, 2011, while cutting $4 billion from the federal budget over the same time span.

"Hoosiers sent me to Congress to help improve the climate for private sector job creation, and to get Washington's binge spending under control," said Young. "This is another in a long series of votes I've cast in line with the marching orders I received from voters: Cut spending in order to get our economy moving again. Until we can show we're serious about spending restraint, job growth will continue to be slow."

The $4 billion in cuts over two weeks are proportionate to the cuts Young voted to support in a mid-February continuing resolution that would have funded the federal government through the end of the fiscal year. The Senate has failed to act on that earlier continuing resolution, which would have cut $100 billion from President Obama's FY2011 budget request. Because the House of Representatives failed to pass a budget last year, the government is currently being funded through a series of continuing resolutions, with the current resolution set to expire on Friday, March 4.

"We have a mess to clean up--both because of the bloated spending in years past and because no budget was passed last year," said Young. "We're taking our duty seriously, and intend to clean up the messes that were left for us. We need a new path back to prosperity, and that's what we're beginning to lay out."

According to non-partisan Heritage Foundation, Young was one of 47 House members who voted for every spending cut presented as amendments to the House's seven month continuing resolution in February, which passed the House by a 235-189 margin. Tuesday's two-week continuing resolution passed the House by a 335-91 margin.
