Lankford Praises Effort to Cut Spending, Keep the Government Running

Statement

Congressman James Lankford (R-OK) praised the effort led by House Republicans to pass a continuing resolution that cuts $4 billion in spending over the next two weeks and keeps the federal government running.

"The status quo is no longer acceptable, and the country is calling for restraint in spending," said Congressman Lankford. "The deficit in 2011 has increased by $250 billion in two months. This shows that budget cuts must start now. We cannot keep barreling down the same path of massive growth in government while ignoring the long-term consequences.

"I'm encouraged to hear that Leader Reid has said the Senate will pass the House bill but our two-week extension is just a short-term fix. We must pass a budget for the rest of the fiscal year that cuts spending, keeps the government working, and avoids the instability of short-term continuing resolutions. It's time for Senate Democrats to get off the sidelines and to start working with the House to find an agreement that seriously addresses our fiscal issues."
