Reducing the Deficit and Protecting Access to Healthcare

Statement

As you may already know, part of the Republican's plan to reduce deficit spending includes a proposal to eliminate funding to the Title Ten Family Planning program, a program dedicated to providing the uninsured, and the underinsured with preventative healthcare and family planning services. It's true, deficit spending should be reined in, but eliminating vital social programs like this one will not dissipate our financial trouble. Putting the health of millions of women and families in jeopardy will not balance our budget when children are born having received no prenatal care and low income women seek emergency room treatment for illnesses easily prevented by regular checkups. The stratification of wealth in our country is reinforced by tax cuts for those who need it the least, while blaming the poor for being so. We must work for rational cuts that will actually reduce the deficit, not continuing to blame those who have the least.
