Spending Bill: Attack on Women's Access to Healthcare

Statement

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1. This bill is blatant attack on the working poor. The problems we face come not from spending too much, but from ineffective use of resources, and the inverse logic of asking too little of those who have the most. My colleague Rep. Mike Pence proposed an amendment which would prevent Planned Parenthood from receiving federal thus completely eliminating the national family planning program Title X. This attack on women's healthcare is indicative of a culture than infantilizes or criminalizes women for being female. A visceral example of this culture is the billboard recently put up, and subsequently taken down. As a black woman from Brooklyn, with a rich Caribbean heritage, I was deeply offended to see this ad put up.
