Sanders Statement on Record Budget Deficit
Burlington, VT - The Administration announced today that the 2004 deficit will be the largest in history - $445 billion - shattering last year's record $375 billion deficit by $70 billion.
Sanders said, "The new deficit numbers show once again that the President's economic policies are taking us in the wrong direction. His tax cuts for the rich are pushing our country further and further into debt and mortgaging our children and grandchildren's future. At the same time, the federal government is ignoring priorities that help middle income families like economic development, health care, education, veterans needs and fixing our roads and bridges. We need to make a major change in our priorities. The President and the Congress need to put fiscal sanity and the needs of the American people ahead of hundreds of billions of dollars in tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans."
